How To Prepare For A Move

How to prepare for a moveYou’ve purchased a new home and sold yours, now it’s time to get busy. Before you can move into the new home, you have to pack and move. Packing and moving doesn’t have to be a stressful endeavor. We can help you with these simple tips on how to prepare for a move.

Getting Started – Preparing to move

The more organized you are the better. Long before the actual move you can begin to plan for the move. The more time you have to prepare the better. You will find keeping a notebook just for the moving process will keep you organized. You can use a notebook or binder to keep track of your to do list, moving checklist and budget. A pocket is great to hold receipts.   Your employer may refund some of the moving expenses.   If not, you might be able to use the receipts for a tax write off.

Make a  Moving Budget

Plan your moving expenses beforehand. This moving budget can guide you in determining what you want to spend and what you can afford to spend. Moving can get quite expensive. Having a budget will give you a realistic look at your finances. It will also help you not overspend.   Here are a few of the costs of moving you should include in your moving budget:

  • Hiring a Moving Company or renting a moving truck
  • Packing and supplies
  • Shampooing carpet and cleaning the old house or apartment
  • Maintenance on your car or truck if your moving long distance
  • Utility deposits
  • Extra money for travel
  • Unexpected expenses

Change Your Address Soon

As soon as you have your new address, you can begin changing addresses. If you are moving out of the area, ask your doctor, dentist, veterinarian and other professionals if they have referrals for you. They may also be able to advise you on what to look for when finding a replacement. Talk with your post office about which mail is forwarded and which isn’t. Some classes of mail are not automatically forwarded.

Collect Moving Supplies

Make sure you have plenty of moving supplies. Many people save money by getting boxes from local supermarkets. No matter where you get your boxes, it helps to always have plenty on hand. You never know when you’re going to have time to pack another box and you don’t want to get ready only to find you’re out of boxes. Besides packing boxes, you also need tape, labeling markers and some kind of packing material for your breakables.

Small boxes are often easier to move especially if you have narrow hallways, doorways or steps to contend with.

Ask For Help

Your friends and neighbors can help in many ways. You may find having extra hands moving, packing or watching the kids is a big help. Enlist the help of your friends early on. Offering a light lunch or other refreshments might help them enjoy the moving process better. Many of your family and friends will enjoy being a part of how you prepare for a move.

Hire A Moving Company

Begin looking for a moving company you can trust. Decide how much of the work you want them to do and how much you’re willing to tackle on your own. Many moving companies will pack certain rooms or partial rooms. They can also take apart furniture and electrical equipment. Think of all the ways your moving company can help you prepare for a move.

How To Prepare For a move

Once you have everything ready, you can begin packing and getting ready to move. Pack the items you’re least likely to need first. Nothing is worse than packing away something you need. Make a list of essential items you don’t want to pack. This will include important papers, toiletries, medicines and other important things you need to keep with you. As you think about how to prepare for a move, more items will come to your mind. Your to do list might start getting longer and longer but you’ll find being organized and preparing to move will curb the stress. Good luck on your move. If you have questions on how to prepare for a move or you’re looking for a good moving company, Vincent Fister Moving and Storage can help.
