5 Tips For a Successful Job Relocation

5 tips for a successful job relocationThese 5 tips for a successful job relocation will help you navigate the hectic reality of moving. Moving is usually a big job and when it accompanies relocating for a new job, it can be even more stressful. Not only do you have to leave the familiar; you have to embrace the new location, start a job you may be unfamiliar with and do all this while losing the support of former colleagues and friends. If you’re married, your spouse may need to find a new job.   Some couples choose to separate for a time until the old house sells. Either way, it can get complicated. Here are 5 tips for a successful job relocation:

Keep To-do Lists

Make sure you begin the prospect of moving by staying organized and writing down lists of what you need to accomplish. If you’ve never been a list maker, now is the time to start. Lists allow you to see what needs to be done which makes the task less overwhelming. You also can feel a sense of accomplishment or release every time you cross off one of the items on your to-do list.

Check to See What Your Company Offers to Help You Relocate

Your company many have a plan to help employees who are relocating. They may pay for part or your moving expenses or reimburse you. Some companies also pay for house hunting trips, moving companies and other moving expenses. Even if you don’t have a relocation budget or your employer normally doesn’t offer anything, you might be able to show your expenses to your employer and negotiate help with your job relocation expenses. If you are moving over 50 miles for a new job you may qualify for tax help on your tax return.

Become Familiar with the New Location

Before you move try to visit the new location. This is a good time to learn as much as you can about the new location even if you can’t take time to visit. Be sure and get a good idea about things like cost of living and housing costs. If the weather is different, look into what it’s like. Check out schools, medical facilities and any other organization that is important to you and your family.

Build a New Social Network Early

After you move or even before if possible, begin to search out people who share a common interest with you. Moving to a new area can be lonely especially if other family members or friends don’t live near by. Organizations that allow you to get to know other people who enjoy the same hobbies or beliefs that you do will help you feel more at home in a new location. Even if your work is taking a lot of your time, finding meaningful relationships will help with the stress of relocating.

Consider A Trial Period

No one wants to think about the fact that they might not like a new job or a new location, but it happens. Before you make long term commitments like buying a house or signing a long-term lease, consider renting your home. This will make things easier should you, heaven forbid, find you need to move again. Of the 5 tips for successful job relocation, this one is the one that people often overlook. Even if you like the job, you may pick the wrong neighborhood or the wrong location in the city if you jump into a commitment right away.
